Controlling who can create, revise, move,
or delete new forums, topics, and messages
In Message Center, to control what participant roles within your
site are able to create, revise, move, or delete forums, topics, and
messages, you can customize the permissions in the default setting
template. The permissions you set in this template will apply each
time a new forum or topic is created.
To configure the default setting template, follow these steps:
- On the Message Center screen, on the Discussion Forums bar, click
Template Settings. The Default Setting Template screen will
- Under "Control Permissions", use the checkboxes to indicate which
roles can execute each of the the following functions:
New Forum: Create new forums from the Message
New Topic: Create new topics from
the Message Center screen.
New Response: Send responses to topics.
Response to Response: Send responses to a topic
Move Postings: Move topic postings to other
topics within the forum.
Change Settings: Change the settings for the
forum and its topics.
Post to Gradebook: Submit grades to the Gradebook
- Under "Message Permissions", use the checkboxes to indicate which
roles can execute each of the following functions:
Read: Read Discussion Forum messages.
Revise Any: Revise anyone's messages after
Revise Own: Revise your messages after you post
Delete Any: Delete anyone's messages after
Delete Own: Delete only your own messages after
you post them.
Mark as Read: Mark messages as read.
- When you're finished, click one of the following:
Save Settings: Save your changes and exit the Discussion
Forum Settings screen. You'll return to the Message Center screen.
Restore Defaults: Restore the default permissions.
Cancel: Cancel your changes.
You can override these settings for a specific forum or topic after
it's been created.
